Regenerative medicine

Regenerative medicine holds great promise for orthopedic surgery. As surgeons continue to face challenges regarding the healing of diseased or injured musculoskeletal tissues, regenerative medicine aims to develop therapies that will replace, repair, or promote tissue regeneration.

Amniotic tissue stem cell injections is a regenerative approach that can sometimes keep patients away from having to get surgery.

Stem cell therapy promotes the repair response of diseased, dysfunctional, or injured tissue using stem cells or their derivatives. Researchers grow stem cells in a lab. These stem cells are manipulated to specialize in specific types of cells, such as heart muscle cells, blood cells, or nerve cells.

The specialized cells can then be implanted into a person during surgery to help promote healing. For example, if a person is undergoing ankle reconstructive surgery stem cells can be injected into the tissue around the ankle to generate tissue growth. These injections are also often used for conservative care. When a patient has inflammation or pain there is a number of surgical procedures used to address the diagnosis. Although, many times an injection can be used to treat these issues prior to committing to surgery. The patient's pain level tends to decrease after injections and healing accelerate. There have been many patients who have been able to avoid the OR and instead receive amniotic tissue injections. Here at APEX, we will explore all options to conservatively treat an issue and avoid the operating room. Stem cells are one of the great options to help us help you not go under the knife.
